A historic, unprecedented moment awaits one of India or New Zealand in Sunday night’s IND vs NZ ICC T20 World Cup 2026 final in Ahmedabad.
New Zealand will be desperate for their maiden men’s T20 World Cup trophy. On the other hand, India will aim to become the first nation to win their third men’s T20 World Cup title, the first to go back-to-back in this competition, and the first-time home men’s T20 WC winners.
It’s been an intriguing journey for both teams in reaching the final.
New Zealand came in second in the group stage, behind South Africa. They then had to sit on their toes in the Super 8 due to a washout against Pakistan, a win over Sri Lanka, and a loss to England. It was eventually Pakistan’s failure to halt Sri Lanka at a certain number of runs that meant the Kiwis pipped Salman Agha’s team on net run rate to reach the semis.
In the semi-final, though, New Zealand was as clinical as a team could have been against an in-form South Africa, winning comfortably by nine wickets.
India had to emerge from a jailbreak in their semifinal against England, thanks largely to Jasprit Bumrah’s incredible 18th over.
India were the clear pre-tournament favorite but have not played at all to their best levels and potential, losing to South Africa in the Super 8 round, which pushed them into must-win territory against the West Indies, where they needed a Sanju Samson special to drag the side over the line.
The pressure clearly will be more on the home side.
Apart from the fact that the IND vs NZ final is at the Narendra Modi Stadium, where the likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah, in particular, would be hoping to bury the ghosts of the 2023 World Cup final, India will also be up against their dampening historical record against the Kiwis in this competition.
