Unarguably, the most shocking release ahead of the IPL 2026 auction was that of Andre Russell, who has been let go by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), a franchise he’s been part of since 2014 and won two titles with.
Russell, one of the IPL’s premier cricketers, has scored over 2500 runs in the IPL at a strike rate of 174 and taken 123 wickets in 140 matches. He is one of only two players, the other being Ravindra Jadeja, to have made more than 200 runs and picked up more than 100 wickets in the IPL’s history.
However, Russell’s form in recent seasons had been disappointing. He’s managed only one above-250-run IPL season since IPL 2020, a year after he was named the Player of the Tournament. He’s been bowling well, but his underwhelming form with the bat and consistent injury issues, plus his high price, made KKR release one of their biggest match-winners.
Nonetheless, Russell will be a sought-after player in the IPL 2026 auction, which will be held in Abu Dhabi on December 16. Multiple teams are expected to eye Russell in the auction.
IPL 2026 Auction: 3 Teams Who Could Go After Andre Russell
Sunrisers Hyderabad
The Sunrisers Hyderabad had a record-breaking IPL season in 2024 but flattered to deceive in IPL 2025 as Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan Kishan had form issues and Nitish Kumar Reddy had injury issues.
Having released Abhinav Manohar and Wiaan Mulder and uncertain of the form and fitness of the above-mentioned players, SRH could realistically lock in on Andre Russell in the IPL 2026 auction. If Russell is fit and firing, SRH’s already frightening batting lineup could rocket to another level next year.
Chennai Super Kings
CSK have the second-largest purse of INR 43.40 crore heading into the auction. One of their key targets will be a premier all-rounder, having traded Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to Rajasthan Royals and released Rachin Ravindra and Matheesha Pathirana, who was their death overs specialist.
Known for his destructive hitting abilities with the bat, Russell has evolved into a wicket-taking death-overs bowler with his bouncers, slower balls, and arching yorkers. Russell’s attributes could help CSK fill multiple positions of their released players.
Kolkata Knight Riders
The general feeling among fans and experts is that KKR might look to rebuy Andre Russell in the IPL 2026 auction for a cheaper price.
The money dynamics justify KKR releasing Russell: KKR had retained Russell for INR 12 crore last year, but releasing the all-rounder freed up INR 18 crore in KKR’s purse because Russell was the Player 1 retention.
In essence, KKR would be in profit if they rebought Russell in the upcoming auction for a price around INR 12 crore. The three-time IPL champions are emotional about their long-term players like Russell and Narine, so them going after Russell in the auction despite releasing him shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.
