Xabi is considered one of the greatest midfielders of the 21st century. Despite being so highly regarded, he did not spend the majority of his career at a single club. Instead, Alonso played for several clubs at different points in his career. He started his professional football career at Real Sociedad in 2000 before moving to Liverpool for five years. The Spaniard then played for Real Madrid for five seasons before ending his career at Bayern Munich in 2017.
While he did spend a lot of time at many clubs, the most iconic spell of Alonso’s career was when he played for Real Madrid from 2009 to 2014. He played 143 games for the Spanish giant, winning multiple titles, even being part of the famous ‘La Decima’ UEFA Champions League win in his last match for the club.

Since retirement, like many midfielders of his generation, Xabi decided to become a manager. After years of managing the Real Sociedad B team, he got his first big break with Bayer Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga in 2022. Under Alonso’s management, Leverkusen won the DFB Pokal in 2023-24 and even won their first domestic league title.
In fact, in 2023-24 Bayer Leverkusen went through the whole season unbeaten across all competitions. They only lost their last game of the season, which was the UEFA Europa League final against Atalanta.
And now, after three successful seasons in Germany, Xabi Alonso gets the biggest managerial job in the world, managing the most popular club in the world, Real Madrid. Earlier today, the club announced that Xabi would be their new manager in a proper ceremony.
Alonso will be replacing Carlo Ancelotti, who will be leaving his job after four successful seasons in Madrid, in which he won two La Ligas, two UCLs, a Copa Del Rey, two UEFA Super Cups, two Copa de Espana, a Club World Cup, and a FIFA International Cup.
