At this point in the league, both CSK and MI were in the race for the playoffs. MI started the season off in the worst way possible, losing four games in a row. However, since that point, the Indians had won three in a row. Meanwhile, CSK had won six out of their nine matches.
The game was played in Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium and saw the home team win the toss and decide to field first. Despite it being a big match between teams with massive names, the buzz around this match was dominated by Sachin’s IPL debut. The Master Blaster had missed the first half of the league due to a groin injury and was playing his first match for MI on the day.
After losing four wickets in the first nine overs before the score of 50, Subramaniam Badrinath and captain MS Dhoni stabilised the CSK innings and took the team well past the 100-run mark with their 95-run partnership. While Badrinath scored a fine half-century with a strike rate of 160, Dhoni scored an anchoring 43 off 35.
In response, the super duo of Sachin Tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya came out to open for MI. In the absence of Tendulkar, Jayasuriya had given Mumbai quick starts this season.
The two legends got MI to a brilliant start. More precisely, while the Sri Lankan great started attacking from the get-go, Sachin was taking his time. The home side had crossed the 80-run mark in seven overs. But then, in the second ball of the eighth over by Joginder Sharma, Tendulkar was bowled by the Indian pacer and got out for 12 off 16.
On the God of Cricket’s IPL debut, it was Sanath Jayasuriya who stole the show, scoring a fantastic century, 114* off 48 with a strike rate of 237.50 to be exact, hitting 11 sixes and nine fours in the process.

This was the Mumbai Indian’s fourth win in what would be a six-match winning streak. However, by losing three of their last five games of the season, MI barely missed out on the playoffs, finishing fifth on the points table.
As for Sachin Tendulkar, he played his entire IPL career with the Mumbai Indians. He and the team had to wait till 2010 to reach the playoffs for the first time and 2013, which was also Sachin’s final season, to win the whole league. He even won the Orange Cap in the 2010 season, in which MI lost in the final to CSK.
