Who is Urvil Patel: The Chennai Super Kings are having their worst season in the Indian Premier League ever. The five-time league winners are currently at the bottom of the points table with two wins, four points, and a dismal net run rate in 11 games. They have lost the last four of their games and have become the first team to be out of contention for the playoffs.
The sign of a struggling team in a tournament like the IPL. And CSK until recently had played every player in the squad in at least one match except four, those being batter Andre Siddharth, bowler Kamlesh Nagarkoti, all-rounder Ramakrishna Ghosh, and wicket-keeper Vansh Bedi.
But now, Bedi has suffered a ligament tear in his left ankle. This has resulted in the Super Kings replacing him with Gujarat-based wicketkeeper/batter Urvil Patel, who joins CSK for Rs. 30 lakh, his base price in the mega auction.
Who is Urvil Patel?
But who is Urvil Patel, why is his name popular in certain cricketing circles, and has he broken any records recently? Patel is a 26-year-old batter and wicketkeeper who was born in Mehsana, Gujarat, on October 17, 1998. He had represented Baroda throughout the junior domestic system but now plays for Gujarat in the likes of the Ranji Trophy and the Syed Mushtaq Trophy.
Urvil is the regular wicketkeeper for Gujarat across formats in domestic cricket. He was even picked by the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2023 but did not play any games. He has shown his consistency and ability in several domestic competitions, but T20 cricket seems to be his speciality.
In a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match on November 27, 2024, Patel blasted a 28-ball century while playing for Gujarat against Tripura in a league match. And while neither team made it to the next round of the competition, Urvil’s performance against Tripura sparked conversation around the country. This was the fastest century by an Indian and the second-fastest ever scored in professional cricket.
This was just days after the IPL 2025 mega-auction. So now, with their backup wicketkeeper/batter going down, the Chennai Super Kings have picked Urvil Patel as Vansh Bedi’s replacement for the remainder of the season.

While it is highly unlikely that Patel will get any match time for CSK in IPL 2025, his being in an IPL squad will only take his career another step forward.
As for the Chennai Super Kings, their campaign in IPL 2025 is coming to an end, for the second season in a row, they have failed to make it to the playoffs. This team will need some serious rebuilding if they are to return stronger next year.
