Why Have India Dropped Yashasvi Jaiswal: On February 11, the BCCI announced two major changes to their provisional squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
The eight-team tournament will be played in Pakistan and Dubai, where India will play all their matches, including the knockouts, and it will run from February 19 to March 9.
Last month, the BCCI had named a 15-man provisional squad. They have made modifications to it. While one change was a forced change due to a back injury to Jasprit Bumrah, with Harshit Rana replacing the Indian spearhead fast bowler, the other change, Yashasvi Jaiswal making way for Varun Chakravarthy, is an interesting one and a talking point.
Bumrah has not yet recovered fully from the back injury he sustained during the Sydney Test last month. According to ESPNcricinfo, Bumrah’s scans “did not reveal anything severe” but “he is not entirely ready to return to bowling” and hence the BCCI doesn’t want to take any risks by rushing him back.
Harshit Rana, who made his ODI debut against England recently and fared well in the two ODIs so far, replaces Bumrah in the squad.
Jaiswal, too, made his ODI debut in the first ODI against England and was part of the provisional squad but has been replaced by Chakravarthy, who also made his ODI debut against England in the second ODI. Jaiswal scored 15 runs on his ODI debut, while Chakravarthy took 1/54 on his ODI debut.
Why Have India Dropped Yashasvi Jaiswal From Their Champions Trophy Squad?
India decided to include Varun Chakravarthy in their Champions Trophy squad, and hence, they have dropped Jaiswal, who was anyway going to be on the bench with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill being the first-choice openers.
Chakravarthy’s excellent T20I form earned him an ODI debut and a place in India’s Champions Trophy squad. Before the start of the ODI series against England, captain Rohit Sharma had suggested Varun’s inclusion as he has “certainly shown something different.”. Rohit added, “I understand that it is the T20 format, but he’s clearly got something different about him, so we just wanted to have an option and see what we can do with him.”
Jaiswal, Mohammed Siraj, and Shivam Dube will be the non-traveling reserves.
