2 Changes India Are Likely To Make in CT25 Squad: Last month, India announced their 15-man provisional squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The squad bears a similar look to the squad of the World Cup 2023. India’s first XI in the upcoming tournament will be similar to the one that reached the final of the home tournament a couple of years ago.
This 15-man squad in the Champions Trophy 2025 will be led by Rohit Sharma, with Shubman Gill being named as his deputy. Mohammed Siraj was not included in India’s squad for the Champions Trophy, and so wasn’t Sanju Samson. Washington Sundar made the cut as the fourth spinner in the squad behind Jadeja, Axar, and Kuldeep.
Mohammed Shami has made his return to the ODI side for the first time since the World Cup 2023 through the ODI series against England, while Yashasvi Jaiswal, who made his ODI debut against England, has been picked in the squad for the Champions Trophy.
The BCCI can make changes to the provisional squad until February 11, and it seems that a couple of changes are on the cards in India’s squad.

Harshit Rana for Jasprit Bumrah
Jasprit Bumrah sustained a back-related injury during the Sydney Test in Australia and has been out of action since then. He was initially named in the squad to face England but had an asterisk next to his name due to his participation being subject to fitness.
Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of selectors, said that Bumrah would miss the first two ODIs against England but could return in the third ODI to test his fitness. However, in BCCI’s updated squad recently, Bumrah’s name was absent, and he’s ruled out of the third ODI as well.
Right now, it seems highly unlikely that Bumrah would be able to play in the Champions Trophy, as the BCCI wouldn’t want to rush him back on the field given he had a back operation in 2023.
If Bumrah is indeed ruled out of the Champions Trophy, the likeliest candidate to replace him is Harshit Rana. Rana made his ODI and T20I debuts recently against England and delivered match-winning three-wicket hauls in both outings. The fact that Rana is part of the squad against England and not Mohammed Siraj is a clear indication of the pecking order.
Varun Chakravarthy for Washington Sundar
Varun Chakravarthy was a late inclusion to India’s squad against England, following his Man of the Series-worthy performances in the T20Is against the same opposition. Chakravarthy has been in outstanding form in T20Is since his return to the side last year: he’s taken 31 wickets in his last 12 T20Is at an average of 11.25 with two five-wicket hauls.
At the same time, India haven’t really shown much confidence in the bowling of Washington Sundar. In the two T20Is that he played against England earlier, he bowled only two overs. Sundar hasn’t really made any impact with the bat as well in white-ball internationals for India.
Further, he is the fourth spinner in the squad. And in any scenario, India are unlikely to play more than three spinners in Dubai. India seem to be strongly tempted by Chakravarthy’s form and mystery, and he could be included in the Champions Trophy squad at the cost of Sundar.
