Mitchell Starc Injury Update: Australian ace-pacer Mitchell Starc suffered a minor injury while bowling today during the fourth Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The injury is unlikely to lead him to skip game time.
Today was Day three of the fourth out of five Australia vs India Test matches, played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The home side won the toss on Day One and decided to bat first.
Taking advantage of the fine batting conditions, the Aussies ended up putting up a first-inning total of 474 on the back of a century by Steve Smith and 50s by Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, and 19-year-old debutant Sam Konstas.

In response, India lost two wickets at the score of 51, before Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal stitched together a 100-run partnership. However, before the end of Day Two, both Jaiswal and Kohli got out, and so did night watchman Akash Deep. At the end of the day, India’s score was 164 as they trailed by 310 runs.
At the start of Day Three, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja lost their wickets in the first session. But then, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar came to the rescue. While Washy scored a good-looking 50, Reddy scored his first international 100 for the Indian Cricket Team. Day Three ended with India on 358/9 as the rain and bad lighting stopped the match on two occasions.
While all the Australian Cricket Team did today was bowl, it was on Day Two that their star pacer Mitchell Starc started facing some issues. While bowling to Virat and Yashasvi in the 21st over, Starc started having issues with his back. He was holding his back for the entirety of Day Three and was bowling in the 130s km/h.

In the post-day match conference, Starc’s bowling partner Scott Boland addressed the situation, saying how the 35-year-old had some issues with his back.

“He’s okay. He just had a bit of a niggle somewhere in his back or rib, I don’t know, somewhere back there, but he came out after the break and was bowling 140 km/h, so I think he’s going to be fine,” said Boland.
He also went on to remind everyone how he bowled with a broken finger in the 2022 Boxing Day Test at the MCG against South Africa, saying,
“I think he is underrated for how tough he is. A couple of years ago here at the MCG, he had a broken finger, and we’re pretty much planning for him not to bowl at all, and then he came out and bowled 140 km/h swingers.”
Finally, Boland went on to highlight how Mitchell Starc has played in a lot of pain for a decent part of his 92-match-long Test career. He said,
“He’s someone who can play through a lot of pain, and you can probably tell (that because) he’s played close to 90 Test matches now. And as a fast bowler, there’s not many games where you do play without any niggle at all. He’s someone who can still bowl at the same pace even when he is really sore, which is a great trait to have.”
In the 25 overs he has bowled in this match, Mitchell Starc is so far wicketless, having given away 86 runs at an economy of 3.44.
Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar’s innings brought the Indian Cricket Team back into contention in the fourth Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test. The winner of this India vs Australia Test match will ensure that they will not lose this series. The winner will also go into the fifth and final Test in Sydney with an advantage in the series.
