R Ashwin Opens Up About Captaining Team India: Legendary Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin opened up about his aspirations to captain the Indian Cricket Team in the past now that he has retired from all international competitions, stating that whatever would have happened, it cannot happen now.
Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket following the recently concluded third Test match of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy at The Gabba in Brisbane. After the rain-affected match ended in a draw, the 28-year-old informed the world in a press conference that he was done with international cricket.
During the press conference itself, he thanked his captains, his teammates, the media, his opposition, and the fans for shaping his career the way it became. He also did not take any questions during or immediately after his announcement.

With 765 wickets in 287 games for Team India, ‘anna’ is one of the greatest bowlers of all time. In Test cricket, his 537 wickets make him the seventh-highest wicket-taker in the format. He was arguably the most essential part of the Indian Cricket Team that was dominant on home soil for 12 years.
One of the most astute cricketers of the modern era, Ashwin has always been a player who has seen the game in a slightly different manner. And with his seemingly deep understanding of the game, many fans and experts have questioned why he was never looked upon as an option to be the national team captain.
When the bowling all-rounder first broke into the national team, MS Dhoni was the captain; then the mantle went to Virat Kohli. Now, for the last three years, Rohit Sharma has been the skipper. Despite being one of the senior-most players in the side, Ashwin has not even been a part-time captain like Jasprit Bumrah and KL Rahul.

Well, now the crafty spinner has answered the questions about his captaincy. While talking to reporters outside his house a day after his announcement, Ravichandran Ashwin claimed that he has no regrets about never captaining the national team, saying,
“It won’t be possible now; it’s all over (laughs). But I don’t have those regrets. I have zero regrets. I have seen many people from a distance who live with regrets. I am not ready to live a life like that; I have no regrets.”
It shall be noted that Ashwin has captained the Punjab Kings in the IPL in the 2018 and 2019 seasons to not much success. He will also continue playing cricket at the club level, like for the Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025.
As for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the series stands at 1-1 with two Australia vs India Tests remaining in Melbourne and Sydney.
