Harbhajan Wants Consistency From Rishabh Pant: Former Indian spin bowler Harbhajan Singh reckons that Indian Cricket Team wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant needs to score runs consistently if India is to do well in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy.
The ongoing five-match Australia vs India Test series will soon be arriving at its halfway point. The first Test at Perth saw India, especially Jasprit Bumrah, dominate the Aussies with the ball while Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli scored 100s, leading to the away team winning the match by 295 runs.
The second Test was quite the opposite; now, it was Australia’s turn to dominate India with the ball. A solid ton by Travis Head led the home side to win the match at the Adelaide Oval by 10 wickets.
Both teams have massive problems heading into the third Test at The Gabba in Brisbane. The Men in Blue have a gigantic issue with their batting order, which has failed in three of the four innings in this series so far. One of the people who have not fired with the bat so far is Rishabh Pant.
Pant is no stranger to batting well Down Under. The last edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia saw a young Rishabh Pant have a fantastic tour, including a match-winning 89 n.o. In the fourth and final Test at The Gabba. That series is a major part of not only Rishabh’s career but also of the India vs Australia rivalry.
Harbhajan Singh, who had a breakout Test series against Australia himself in 2001, has now spoken up about the ongoing struggles of the star wicketkeeper. Pant has crossed the 20-run mark thrice in the ongoing series but has not scored a 50. His highest score has been 37, scored in the first inning at Perth.
Harbhajan Wants Consistency From Rishabh Pant
During a recent discussion on the Star Sports show ‘Game Plan,’ Harbhajan said that Pant needs to be more consistent with his run-scoring if India is to do well in this series.
“You definitely expect that from him. It’s not that Rishabh Pant has come to Australia for the first time, and no one knows what he would do. He is known for knocks like the one he played in Brisbane (in the 2020-21 BGT), and today also that match is remembered for Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill, who were youngsters, winning us that match,” he said.
The legendary spinner then went on to say that the 27-year-old needs to read situations and play shots accordingly, saying,
“It was a historic match, but more consistency is required from him. He needs to apply himself a little more. It’s okay that he plays the scoop and reverse sweep, but I feel when the situation and team need him to play solidly, he has to show that, and then only the consistency would come.”
The third match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will start on December 14 and will be played at The Gabba. India now needs to avoid any losses and win this series convincingly if they are to qualify for the World Test Championship final in June 2025.
