Jaiswal Youngest Indian To 1000 Test Runs A Year: Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has become the youngest batter in the Indian Cricket Team ever to score 1000 runs in a calendar year during the ongoing Test match against New Zealand.
Today is Day Two of the second of three India vs New Zealand Test matches. The match is being played at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Pune and saw the Kiwis win the toss and decide to bat first.
On the first day of the match, New Zealand looked to trouble India a lot, especially in the first session. Despite it being a turning track, the BlackCaps lost only two wickets in the first session and scored nearly 100 runs. While Ravichandran Ashwin took the first three wickets, it was when Washington Sundar came into play when India got on top of the game.
The 25-year-old all-rounder took seven wickets and currently dismantled the second half of the New Zealand innings as the team was bowled out for 259. However, this too was a fine score on a pitch like this.
With about 10 overs remaining in the day, India came out to bat. Yashasvi Jaiswal and captain Rohit Sharma took the strike. The day did not end on a positive note for India, as Sharma was dismissed in just the third over. Jaiswal and Shuban Gill then took India to the end of the day’s play.
The pitch started showing its true colours on Day Two. While on the first day, the ball did spin a lot, it was how the Indian bowlers varied the pace of the ball that resulted in wickets. On the second day, the ball refused to bounce normally, remaining low after a bounce on the pitch.

Gill lost his wicket at the score of 30, and so did Yashasvi. But the score was a little more memorable for the Rajasthan Royals opener. When he reached the 23-run mark while batting, Yashasvi Jaiswal reached 1000 Test runs in the year 2024. This is not only a major milestone for a young batter, but also made him the youngest Indian to score 1000 runs in a calendar year.
This record was previously held by 1983 World Cup winner Dilip Vengsarker, who scored 1000 runs in 1979 at the age of 23. Yashasvi is currently just 22 years old and will turn 23 in December.
In what is only his 10th match of the year, Yashasvi Jaiswal has scored 1007 runs in 2024 with an average of 59.23. This includes two magnificent 200s. He is currently second on the list of highest run scorers in the format this year, as Joe Root has scored 1305 runs in 14 matches at an average of 59.31.
Having broken this long-standing record, Jaiswal can approach and even break another record. Sachin Tendulkar scored 1562 runs in 2010, which is the most for any Indian in a year. Yashasvi still has five Tests to play this year and can approach the record if he maintains his prime form. However, four of those Tests are to be played in Australia. He can even try to approach Virender Sehwag’s 1462 runs, which he scored in 2008, the most for any Indian opener in a year.
As for the Indian Cricket Team, they were bundled out for 156, taking on a 103-run deficit in the first inning. New Zealand is now at 87/2 in their second inning and has a 190-run lead. If India loses this match, this would be their first series loss at home since losing 2-1 to England in 2012.
