Hansi Flick Comments On Barcelona UCL Loss: FC Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has reacted to the Spanish giants losing their opening game in the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League season to Monaco, conceding that the team made a few mistakes on the field and did not play at their best.
The first Matchday of the UCL has just concluded. The league has changed its model to integrate more teams. While only 32 teams competed in the tournament until last season, the pool has been expanded to 36 teams.
Also, rather than being in a group of four teams each, every team will face eight teams in the league phase, two teams each from the four pots, placement in which is determined by how well a team has done in Europe.
The Blaugrana are in Pot One and opened their campaigns against AS Monaco, who are in Por Four. The match was played in the Stade Louis II Stadium in Monaco.

10 minutes into the game, defensive midfielder Eric Garcia received a red card. A poorly judged pass by Barca keeper Marc Ter Stegen was intercepted by Takumi Minamino. To stop the Japanese attacker from scoring, Garcia pulled him down just outside the box and was promptly sent off.
With just 10 players on the pitch for the remainder of the match, the Catalan club conceded their first goal in the 16th minute at the hands of right-winger Maghnes Akliouche.
Barca prodigy Lamine Yamal, who is not only in fine form but is one of the highest-profile footballers in the world at just the age of 17, scored a goal in the 28th minute via a low shot into the bottom corner, 1-1.

But in the second half, Barcelona started making some mistakes under the pressure of playing one man short. One of these moments came in the 71st minute. Forward George Ilenikhena caught the defence sleeping, sped past them, and scored Monaco’s second goal of the day. And that is the scoreline at which the match ended, 2-1 to Monaco in one of the biggest upsets of the season.
Hansi Flick Comments On Barcelona UCL Loss
Speaking about his team’s loss in the Champions League, Barca manager Hansi Flick had this to say in the post-match conference:
“The game changed after the red card [for Eric Garcia] after 10 minutes, causing us to change our idea and our planning. We tried at all times. We defended with passion, but we made some mistakes. I saw many positive aspects of the game. We had chances, but in the end, they brought on fast players, and they deserved to win. We did not play at the highest level or in the way we wanted to play. We have to accept that. I am sure that when other players return, we will be stronger.”
The German manager also acknowledged his young talent, Lamine Yamal, the team’s only goalscorer on the night. In the praise of the youngster, Flick said,
“Lamine tried hard. It was a difficult match, and you have to adapt to these situations. The substitution of Lamine and Cubarsi was more thinking about Sunday. They were very tired.”
With this loss, Barcelona might be in some trouble. Only the top eight teams out of 36 will automatically qualify for the round of 16. While teams ranked 9-24 will compete in another round before making it to the pre-quarterfinal. By losing a match to a team in the Pot Four, Barca has made it extremely difficult for them to finish in the top eight.
