Cristiano Ronaldo Called Messi The Best Player: British TV personality Piers Morgan has opened up about the time Cristiano Ronaldo called Lionel Messi the best football player in the world in an interview.
The Portuguese icon is currently in the headlines. On the ongoing international break, he scored his 900th career goal, reaching the milestone no footballer has reached before. The five-time Balon d’Or winner accomplished the landmark achievement in the 2-1 win over Croatia in the UEFA Nations League. He then scored his 901st goal as he rescued his national team against Scotland in a 2-1 victory.
With the Real Madrid and Manchester United legends in the news, Morgan, who is a TV journalist, recalled his famous interview with Ronaldo in 2022 on TalkSPORT. Right before the FIFA World Cup that year, CR7 sat down for an interview with the Brit.

While the main headline coming off that interview was Cristiano’s dissatisfaction with Manchester United as the club suspended him following the interview’s surfacing, Piers Morgan now recalls a conversation he had with the footballing legend before that interview about who was the best player in the world.
“I had a very interesting conversation with Cristiano; we had dinner after I first interviewed him three years ago; it was a really great conversation, and I really like him as a person. He was incredibly respectful about Messi, and I said to him, ‘Who’s the best player you’ve ever seen?” He revealed in a recent appearance.
The ‘Messi vs Ronaldo’ debate has dominated football discourse for over a decade now. Two of the greatest players of all time playing and peaking in the same era is incredibly rare. And so, the fans of both players have been repping their GOAT for years. The two have won countless titles, have been goal-scoring machines, and are two of the most popular athletes on the planet.
So when Ronaldo was asked this question, it was somewhat of a surprise that he named Messi as the best player he had ever seen. But that is only because he has never seen himself play.
“He said, ‘Messi, but you’re asking the wrong question; you’re not asking me who is the best player…’, because, of course, he has never seen himself play live. So, that made me laugh,” said Morgan.
At the age of 39, Cristiano Ronaldo is still a goal-scoring machine. Playing for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, he scored 44 goals in 45 games in all competitions for the club last season. In less than two seasons, he has scored over 60 goals in Saudi Arabia.
