Why Barcelona Failed In Signing Federico Chiesa: FC Barcelona is having a tough time in the ongoing transfer window. Reports have now emerged for the reason as to why the Spanish giants failed to sign a big target, Italian attacker Federico Chiesa.
Chiesa has had a peculiar career at the top level. Making a splash onto the scene before the age of 20 for Fiorentina, the winger was signed by Juventus in 2020, which was the country’s biggest club at the moment. He then had what many would consider his breakout tournament, the 2020 Euros, which took place in 2021 due to the pandemic. In that tournament, he scored two goals in seven games and came out the other side of that tournament with his stock sky-high.
But in the three years since, the now 26-year-old has not had the best time. While he, on occasion, has shown glimpses of the player he was a few years ago, his career has been severely hampered by injuries. In 131 games for the ‘Old Lady’, Chiesa has scored 32 and assisted 23 goals. He has also won a Serie A, one Copa Italia, and one Supercoppa Italiana with Juve.
At one point, right after Euro 2020, Federico’s market value climbed to as high as 70 million euros. But when it came time to sell him in the 2024 summer transfer window, Liverpool managed to pick the winger up for just 12.5 million euros.
While there were several clubs in the race for the Italian before the start of the season, no team was willing to pay a decent price for him. One team that was desperately looking for an attacker after they failed to sign their initial target was FC Barcelona. After not being able to get Nico Williams from Athletic Club, the Blaugrana targeted Chiesa.

But that transfer clearly never went through on account of the former Juve player being signed by the Premier League side. SPORT has now reported the reason behind Hansi Flick’s side not being able to sign their second target winger. The report states that the Spanish giants were willing to pay a fee of 10 million euros, which was fine for both parties. What was not nice for the selling club was the fact that Barca wanted to pay the fee over five years. The issue was that Juventus needed the cash immediately, and thus the deal fell through.
Speaking on joining Liverpool, Federico Chiesa had this to say:
“I’m so happy to be a Liverpool player. When Richard Hughes (Liverpool Sporting Director) called me and he said, ‘Do you want to join Liverpool?’ and the coach called me, I said yes immediately because I know the history of this club. I know what it represents to the fans. So, I’m so happy, and I can’t wait to get started.”
As for Barcelona, they have had a lot of troubles in the ongoing transfer window. From not being able to sign their target to having to let go of Ilkay Gundogan for free to stay under the La Liga salary cap. In fact, that salary cap resulted in them not being able to sign their star signing Dani Olmo for the longest time.
