United And Spurs In Race For Barcelona Defender: Premier League sides Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are seemingly in a race to sign Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen just days before the transfer deadline.
Barca is having a tough time during this transfer window. While they did sign Dani Olmo after the Spanish striker had a fantastic run in the 2024 UEFA Euros, they failed to sign one of their bigger targets in Nico Williams. More importantly, they are well above the La Liga salary cap and do not have cap space to register Olmos or any other signing into the squad.
Because of that, the Catalan club has put Christensen in the transfer window, and it seems like the Dutch star will be playing the upcoming season in England.
First in the battle to sign the Barcelona player is Manchester United. The Red Devils have had a busy transfer window. They have made some big money moves. From right-back Noussair Mazraoui and star centre-back Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich, to young defensive sensation Leny Yoro from Lille, and striker Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna, who scored on his club debut against Fulham. Manager Erik Ten Hag’s side is also closing in on Uruguay and PSG midfielder Manuel Ugarte.
Spurs too have had a very busy summer transfer window. They have signed a lot of young talent. There is 18-year-old right winger Yang Min-hyuk from the K-LEague and 19-year-old left winger Wilson Odobert from Burnley. Manager Ange Postecoglou has also signed young midfielders Lucas BErgwvall and Archie Grey from Djurgarden and Leeds United respectively. And in their biggest signing in this transfer window so far is Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth.
United And Spurs In Race For Barcelona Defender
Both – United and Tottenham have shown great interest in signing Christensen, and Barcelona is willing to finalise a deal for a reduced price of 25 million euros. The 28-year-old defender has previously been linked with other English clubs, like Newcastle United.
The sale of Andreas Christensen is a worrying sign for the former La Liga Champions. These financial woes have made an unmistakable dent in their squad. Before this presumed sale, the club had to let Ilkay Gundogan, who was arguably the club’s best player last season, go to Manchester City for free.
All the teams that are a part of Christensen’s transfer are clubs looking to rebuild. While Barca is nowhere near rivals Real Madrid in terms of star quality at the moment, Manchester United had their worst Premier League season in 2023/24 as they finished eighth. Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur are still looking for an outright central striker.
