Deepika Kumari In Round Of 16 At Paris Olympics: Deepika Kumari became the second Indian to reach the round of 16 in the women’s singles archery event in the 2024 Paris Olympics after Bhajan Kaur did so yesterday.
Deepika is one of the most experienced athletes in the Indian contingent that went to the 2024 Olympics. Participating in her fourth Games, the 30-year-old is one of the most decorated archers in the world but is yet to win a medal at the Olympics.
Being the unofficial leader of the Indian women’s archery team, Kumari finished 23rd in the ranking round. While the team finished fourth and reached the quarterfinal of the team event, Deepika, along with teammates Bhajan Kaur and Ankita Bhakat, reached the round of 64 in the individual event.
Yesterday, while Bhakat lost her round of 64 match despite being the 11th seed, Kaur won her first-round match before defeating Wioleta Myszor of Poland in the round of 32, the same archer that defeated Ankita Bhakat in the round of 64.

Today, it was Deepika Kumari’s turn to kick off the individual archery campaign. In the first round, she took on Estonia’s Reena Parnat, who finished 42nd in the ranking round.
In the singles archery competition, a match consists of five rounds where each archer shoots three arrows, with the one with the higher score winning. Winning a round grants you two points, and the player who reaches six points (or wins three rounds) wins. If there is a tie at the end of five rounds, there is a tie-breaker arrow, where the archer who shoots closest to the centre wins.
In what was some solid shooting, Deepika shot a 29 out of 30 in the first round and won the first set. The Estonian took the second round with a score of 27-26.
The third round was a tie, with both archers shooting 27 each. In the fourth one, Deepika fumbled and shot only 24 as Parnat took the lead in the match by shooting a 27 and taking round four.
Having to win the fifth round, Deepika shot a perfect 30 and won the round. With both archers at 5-a-piece, the match went into a tiebreaker, where the Indian shot a disappointing eight, which was 123.3 mm away from the centre. But in response, the Estonian shot hers 146.7 mm from the centre as the veteran Kumari went into the round of 16, where she took on Quinty Roeffen of the Netherlands.

This was a much easier match for the former World Champion. Shooting a 29 in the first round, she won that one by one point. The Dutch took the second round 29-27. In the third round, while Deepika’s score was just 25, Roeffen’s first shot in the round went outside the target area, netting her zero point. She could only then score 17 to lose the third round.
The fourth round saw the Indians dominate once more, winning 28-23 and thus winning the match 6-2, storming into the round of 16 in the women’s singles event at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
In her fourth Olympics event, Deepika Kumari will be looking to bring India its first medal in archery at the games.
