SL vs IND Match Highlights And Report-1st T20I: Suryakumar Yadav started his full-time T20I captaincy stint with a thunderous half-century that made the difference in the first T20I against Sri Lanka in Pallekele as India won by 43 runs.
India posted a total of over 200 runs riding on Suryakumar’s 58 (26), which included eight fours and two sixes. But they were given a scare by the 84-run opening stand between Nissanka and Mendis in 8.4 overs. However, once that was broken, India pounced on the hosts to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka won the toss and elected to bowl first. Yashasvi Jaiswal started the innings with a four on the first ball, picked up over a fine leg, and Shubman Gill cracked two fours to end an expensive first over.
The young Indian opening pair went on like a breeze in the powerplay and whacked a flurry of boundaries. The fourth and sixth overs yielded 15 runs each for India, though Gill got out on the last ball of the powerplay for 34 (16) to Madushanka. India’s total of 74 runs was the highest they have managed against Sri Lanka in the powerplay.
On the first ball after powerplay, Hasaranga had Jaiswal stumped for 40 (21). Suryakumar Yadav, the new Indian captain, asserted his dominance right from the start with a majestic six to Madushanka before hitting the bowler for two fours.
At the end of the 10th over, India were 111/2. While Suryakumar kept tonking boundaries from his end, Rishabh Pant struggled for proper timing and connection. Suryakumar swept Hasaranga for two fours and then took on Pathirana for a sixer. He reached his half-century in only 22 balls and got out for 58 (26) to Pathirana.
Pant was 20 (20) at one stage before he finally connected two proper hits to the fence. Pathirana brought Sri Lanka back into the game with the wickets of Hardik Pandya, Riyan Parag, and Pant, who scored 49 (33). India finished with 203.
Just like the Indian openers, the Sri Lankan openers also got off to a terrific start as Pathum Nissanka creamed two fours off Arshdeep Singh in the first over and then clobbered two sixes to Mohammed Siraj. Kusal Mendis stroked three fours to spinners Bishnoi and Axar to end the powerplay at 55/0.
The 84-run opening stand was broken by Arshdeep with Mendis’ wicket. While Nissanka continued to earn boundaries – during which he crossed his half-century – including sixes off Arshdeep and Pandya, Sri Lanka started to lose wickets at the other end.
Axar had Kusal Perera, and Bishnoi dismissed Asalanka. Nissanka got out to Axar for 79 (48), bowled while trying to cut without much space. The hosts sank further when Dasun Shanaka got run out and Kamindu Mendis was bowled by Parag. From thereon, the Indian bowlers comfortably closed out the game and won by 43 runs.
Score summary: India 213/7 in 20 overs (Suryakumar Yadav 58, Matheesha Pathirana 4/40); Sri Lanka 170/10 in 19.2 overs (Pathum Nissanka 79, Riyan Parag 3/5). India defeated Sri Lanka by 43 runs.
