Sri Lanka Womens Cricket Team captain Chamari Athapaththu scored an unbeaten ton against Malaysia in the 2024 Womens Asia Cup and broke several records during her spectacular inning.
Sri Lanka took on Malaysia in the second group game of the competition. Having already defeated Bangladesh in their opening game, the home team in this competition won the toss and decided to bat first at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla.
Athapaththu opened the inning with Vishmi Gunaratne, who was dismissed in the second over after scoring just one run. The skipper then built a decent partnership with Harshitha Samarawickrama, who lost her wicket in the 10th over as the team score was 69/2.
From this point, however, Chamari took the steering in her hand and drove the team towards a massive score. Her 115-run partnership with wicketkeeper Anushka Sanjeewani saw the latter score only 31 runs.

Chamari soon reached her century and was actually unbeaten at 119 in 69 balls at the end of the inning.
This inning broke several records. Firstly, Chamari Athapaththu became the first Sri Lankan female cricketer to score a century for her national team. She also became the first centurian in the Women’s Asia Cup in the T20 format, with the previous largest score coming off the bat of Mithali Raj in 2018, also against Malaysia.
Yet another record broken by Chamari during this inning was the record of most sixes in an inning in the Women’s Asia Cup, as the Sri Lankan captain hit seven maximums in the fine inning.
After scoring 184 runs in their 20-over quota, Sri Lanka wiped Malaysia out for just 40 runs to win the game by 144 runs. With this win, the Lankan Lionesses have all but qualified for the semi-finals of the 2024 Womens Asia Cup.
