Argentina’s 2024 Copa America winning team was seen chanting racist chants after the final, and it went viral on social media as Enzo Fernandez, who was recording the video, was live. This evoked a lot of criticism, even leading to the French Football Federation filing a case against the team.
The disgusting chants by Messi’s Argentina team caused a stir in the football world. Enzo Fernande’s Chelsea teammate and French player, Wesley Fofana, called the chant “uninhibited racism.” Fernandez’s other Chelsea teammates, including Axel Disasi, Malo Gusto, Lesley Ugochukwu, and Benoit Badiashile, unfollowed him on IG.
Later, Fernandez apologized for the act.
De Paul Slams Fofana for Calling Out Racism
Fernandez’s Argentina teammate, Rodrigo De Paul, shamelessly slammed Wesley Fofana for taking the criticism to social media. According to De Paul, the French player should have called the Argentine if there was an issue.
De Paul was speaking on Olga en Vivo, via Diario AS.
“You don’t analyse the songs that much. I can understand people who have suffered racism and don’t like it, but then there is a place for everything,”
“If someone or a colleague of Enzo feels offended, the way to go about it is to call him if you know him personally, not to put it on social networks. There is a bit of malice in it, or maybe wanting to put Enzo in a spot that he has nothing to do with. You don’t have to add fuel to the fire or make it into a show.”
It’s not the first time that Argentina has been accused of racism. The monkey gestures by their fans when they play Brazil and the 2022 FIFA World Cup’s vulgar chants from the stadium against the French players are just a few examples. The surprising thing is that neither FIFA, UEFA nor the National Football Federation are reluctant to take any action against Lionel Messi’s Argentina players.
