India’s young guns thumped Zimbabwe in the recently finished T20I series. The squad had only 3 players that were selected for the T20 World Cup 2024: Sanju Samson, Yashaswi Jaiswal, and Shivam Dubey. The side was led by opener Shubman Gill.
Gill’s start to the campaign as India’s captain was not so good, as Zimbabwe embarrassed India in the first match to go 1-0 in the 5-match series. But the Blues hit back and trashed the hosts in the rest of the four matches to clinch the series 4-1.
Former India Selector Criticizes Shubman Gill
After the series, Gill has been praised for his captaincy while also getting some backlash for his poor form in the batting. Chief Selector Syed Saba Karim is one of the people who has this opinion.
“While Shubman Gill performed admirably as captain, his batting lacked the consistency I had expected. As a young captain, the pressure of losing the first match was likely a contributing factor. However, Gill’s captaincy was commendable, even as his batting fell short of the high standards he has set for himself,” remarked Karim on Sony Sports.
“Despite the challenges, Gill efficiently used his players. While Jaiswal scored runs, he did not get the opportunity to play in the World Cup. When a player hasn’t batted or played matches for an extended period, it’s difficult for them to immediately regain their form. Yet, we witnessed Jaiswal overcome these obstacles and excel,” he added.
