Argentina defeated Columbia 1-0 in the final of Copa America 2024 to win their third major trophy in the span of three years. This game concluded the tournament which spanned for about a month in the United States of America.
While the finale of this competition might have been a showcase of the best in sports on the field, that was not the case off of it, as several fans suffered incredible difficulty just to enter the stadium.
The Argentina vs Columbia final, which was being played in Miami, Florida’s Hard Rock Stadium, was delayed for a couple of hours in its kick-off.
Why did the kick-off of one of the most important games of football delayed, it is because fans were not allowed entry into the stadium. In what would become a scene, thousands of fans gathered in front of some gates.
While the capacity of the Hard Rock Stadium is just over 65000, a lot more people than that showed up. It would turn out that several people with no tickets arrived at the gates as well. While some of them were looking to score some tickets, others looked to enter the stadium by other means.
While several fans suffered from the intense Miami heat and a lack of water, others broke fences to enter the stands. Not only that, but videos have also emerged of fans entering the air conditioning vents to discreetly enter the stadium.
Fans React To Mistreatment At Copa America
With all this chaos in hosting the final of Copa America 2024, people have now been questioning whether the United States is ready to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. While the World Cup will be hosted in the US, Canada, and Mexico, the vast majority of games will be held in the States.
The questions regarding the US being the host of the next FIFA World Cup were only exaggerated by former President Donald Trump being shot in a rally just a day before. There are doubts about the country being safe to host such a tournament in light of all the debate around control
While the United States Football Federation (USSF) did not control the hosting of this tournament, which was overseen by CONCACAF and CONMEBOL (North and South American Football Federations), it is clear that the USSF has a lot of ground to cover if they want to host a successful World Cup in two years time.
