Former Indian wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel has criticized Pakistan Cricket Team captain Babar Azam for, among other things, wanting to open for the team despite that not being the best choice.
Pakistan had a dismal campaign in the 2024 T20 World Cup. In their opening game of the tournament, the Men in Green lost to the United States of America, a team playing their first World Cup, in the Super Over. In the following game, they failed a run-a-ball chase against arch-rivals India, even when the equation came down to needing 48 runs in as many balls at one point.
And yes, Pakistan did win their games against Canada and Ireland, but more was needed for them to get promoted from Group A to the Super 8 with India and the US qualifying for the second round.
Check Out: Parthiv Patel Calls Babar Azam Selfish
Despite being his team’s leading run scorer in this World Cup, Babar Azam did not have a good tournament. He scored his runs very slowly, putting his side in difficult positions while chasing.
Before the T20 World Cup, Pakistan played a five-T20I series against New Zealand. In that series, it was Saim Ayub who opened the inning with Mohammad Rizwan. But as soon as the World Cup arrived, Babar retook his opening slot in the batting line-up.
Parthiv Patel Calls Babar Azam Selfish
In a recent discussion with Star Sports after India’s win in the final of the cup against South Africa, Parthiv Patel discussed the perils of the Pakistan Cricket Team. Firstly, he criticized the skipper for coming in to open, calling him selfish. He said:
“Skipper wanted to open, so Fakhar was demoted. When the captain is selfish, there is no chance.”
Parthiv Patel then went on to criticise the quality of talent in the Pakistan squad, claiming that the players on this team play very slowly and are unable to keep up with international players.
“They don’t have good players in T20 format. Batters are scoring runs at a strike rate of 150-160 but Pakistan cricketers are still in the 120s. They are behind other international teams,” said Patel.
While the dates are not set in stone, Bangladesh will travel to Pakistan on a multi-format tour in August 2024.
