Teams qualified in Super 8 of T20 World Cup: The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 got underway on June 1. The tournament is being co-hosted by West Indies and the USA. This is the first time in history that the USA is hosting a major ICC tournament at the senior men’s level.
This is the ICC’s bid to generate interest in the game among Americans, targeting the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, where cricket will return to the Olympics.
The T20 World Cup 2024 is the biggest edition in terms of the number of teams in the main tournament—20. The 20 teams are grouped into four groups of five sides each, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the Super 8 round.
There, they will be separated into two groups of four teams each, with the top two advancing into the semi-final. The final is slated for June 29 in Barbados.
Teams qualified in Super 8 of T20 World Cup:
Group A: India, USA
India and USA have qualified for the Super 8 from Group A. While India, who topped the group, was one of the expected teams, USA advancing ahead of Pakistan is a huge shocker. Pakistan are the runners-up and semi-finalists of the last two T20 World Cups, while USA are playing in the competition for the first time.
USA defeated Canada and Pakistan (in Super Over), and suffered defeat against India. But with their game against Ireland getting washed out, they finished with five points while Pakistan, who lost to India as well, can get to a maximum of four points.
Group B: Australia, TBD
Mitchell Marsh’s Australia comfortably got into the Super 8 after winning their first three games.
In Group B, Namibia and Oman have been eliminated from the race, while England and Scotland are competing for one spot.
Group C: West Indies, Afghanistan
From Group C, co-hosts West Indies and Rashid Khan’s Afghanistan have advanced to the next round, knocking out Kane Williamson’s New Zealand. The Kiwis had reached the semi-final and final of the last two T20 World Cups, but they have looked simply under-prepared for this tournament, and as a result of losing to West Indies and Afghanistan, they have been knocked out.
Uganda and Papua New Guinea are the other two teams in this group that are knocked out.
Group D: South Africa, TBD
Aiden Markram’s South Africa have had three tight games, against Sri Lanka, Netherlands, and Bangladesh, but they won all three to secure a berth in the Super 8.
From this group, only Sri Lanka have been eliminated yet, with Nepal, Bangladesh, and the Netherlands competing for one spot in the next round. Bangladesh are favorites right now with a victory over the Dutch.
