3) Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli rounds out the top three Indian captains with the most T20I wins. One thing that must be highlighted before we go further on this list is that the history of T20 cricket in India can be divided into three phases. The first phase saw MS Dhoni captain the side for a decade up until 2017. The next was Virat Kohli’s four-year stint as ODI captain up until 2021, and then came Rohit Sharma’s era of captaincy, with some others sprinkled in between
India played 50 T20Is under Kohli’s captaincy, which is the fewest for anyone with anything above 20 matches captained. Of those 50 games, India won 30 and lost 16 for a win percentage of 60.
India played only one T20 World Cup under Virat. The 2021 tournament saw India being eliminated in the Group stage to end what was otherwise a glorious era of limited-overs cricket for India.

2) MS Dhoni
The pioneer of T20 captaincy with India, the first series Dhoni ever captained India in was the triumphant 2007 T20 World Cup. That tournament made Dhoni the India captain for the next 10 years which saw the team win countless series and trophies and an era when, for the first time in their history, India could be considered the best cricket team in the World.
India played 72 T20I under MS Dhoni’s captaincy, winning 41 of them for a win percentage of 56.94. India played six T20 World Cups under him, winning one of them in 2007.
1) Rohit Sharma
The most winning T20 captain for India is the current one. India is now in its third era of T20 cricket. Now that the shortest format of the international game is becoming its most popular one, India will look to climb to the top of the mountain in T20s like they haven’t since its inception about 17 years ago.
India has played 55 T20Is under Rohit Sharma, the majority of them since 2021 after Kohli gave up the captaincy. Out of 55, the Men in Blue have won a whopping 42 T20Is under Rohit for a win percentage of 76.36.
Having played just one T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma, India embarks on its second. A solid win over Ireland to kick off the tournament will hopefully be a sign of big things for the team in the competition, maybe even a second T20 World Cup title.
