Aakash Chopra On Coaching Style Of Gautam Gambhir: Former India batter Aakash Chopra discussed Gautam Gambhir’s coaching philosophy after the latter was offered the team India head coach job, claiming that he behaves like a strict father with his players.
Gambhir, a legendary player in his own right, is now proving his chops as a team coach and manager. In 2022, he was appointed as the mentor of the newly formed Lucknow Super Giants. In his two years with the team, he took them to the playoffs twice.
This season, he came back to the team where he won two IPL trophies as the captain, the Kolkata Knight Riders. Not only is KKR looking like a much better side with relatively the same squad as last season, but they also finished on top of the league.
Rahul Dravid has been India’s head coach since Ravi Shastri left the job following the 2021 T20 World Cup. During Dravid’s tenure, India has won most of its bilateral series. The national team also made it to the finals of the 2023 World Test Championship and the 2023 ODI World Cup, only to lose to Australia.
The Wall’s tenure as the India head coach is set to end following the 2024 T20 World Cup. Reports have now emerged that Gautam Gambhir has been offered the job and is high on BCCI’s list of head coach prospects.
Aakash Chopra On Coaching Style Of Gautam Gambhir
Aakash Chopra released a video on his YouTube channel discussing Gambhir’s potential appointment as the national team’s head coach. In the video, he opined that the 42-year-old would not be a bad choice.
“Not a bad choice; there is no doubt about that because he is a straightforward person. He knows how to manage and build a team. I really rate him highly when it comes to the auction. However, there will be no auction for the Indian team. Gautam Gambhir, the coach, has a very strong personality,” he said.
Chopra then went on to describe how Gautam Gambhir likes to manage his sides, wondering whether he would be compatible with the senior players in the side, saying,
“When there is a transition and a new captain is coming, then yes. However, if the team has a lot of seniors already, I will be a little wary because Gauti’s style of working is almost like a strict father. When the father is strict, the children have to be a little careful.”
Under Gambhir’s mentorship, the Kolkata Knight Riders have finished on top of the IPL 2024 table. They will now face the Sunrisers Hyderabad in Qualifier 1 on May 21 in Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.
