Is Shreyas Iyer The Next India Captain: Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa made a bold statement recently when he suggested that Shreyas Iyer could be India’s next captain.
Iyer led the Kolkata Knight Riders to the franchise’s third IPL title, 10 years after the last one. Throughout the season, Iyer was impressed with how he marshaled his troops, using his bowlers well and impressively putting fields.
While many credit team coach Chandrakant Pandit and mentor Gautam Gambhir for KKR’s triumphant 2024 season, Shreyas Iyer’s contribution as captain cannot be overlooked, even though he did not have the best season as a batter.

It will be somewhat of a shame that the IPL-winning captain will not even be part of the Indian squad for the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup. In fact, Iyer wasn’t even offered a central contract by the BCCI earlier this year.
Out of the team and out of the central contract list, Shreyas gave a befitting reply to the board and team selectors.
Is Shreyas Iyer The Next India Captain
Robin Uthappa, who won the IPL with KKR in 2014 under Gautam Gambhir’s captaincy, has now discussed how Shreyas Iyer has the ability to handle a dressing room full of star players successfully and how that makes him an ideal fit for the next captain of the Indian cricket team.
Speaking to JioCinema after KKR’s win in the final of IPL 2024 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Uthappa had this to say about Shreyas:
“I am going to say it here. He is going to be the future India captain. I think he is next in line, maybe even ahead of Shubman Gill. He has got the character and wherewithal to handle a team. I think there’s a lot he has learned this season.”
As stated above, Shreyas had just an average season with the bat in IPL 2024. But for a batsman of his caliber, an average season is still more than decent for most batters.
This season, Shreyas Iyer scored 351 runs in 14 matches with an average of 39 and a strike rate of 146.86. But this paled in comparison to the team’s openers, Sunil Narine and Phil Salt, who played a major role in the title win by scoring over 400 runs each with a strike rate of 180+.
