Will MS Dhoni retire after IPL 2024: Chennai Super Kings batting coach Michael Hussey wishes that MS Dhoni continues to feature in the IPL and dons the yellow jersey for a couple of more seasons.
As the league phase of the IPL 2024 is set to conclude with CSK having one more match left, a knockout match against RCB for playoff qualification, the speculations about whether this is Dhoni’s last season have reached a zenith once again.
Dhoni, who will turn 43 in July, led CSK to their fifth IPL trophy last year but handed the captaincy duties to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of IPL 2024, which was the biggest indication so far that the Ranchi-born perhaps has decided to call time on his IPL career.
He’s been in cracking form with the bat this season. Batting only in the last few overs, Dhoni has walloped 136 runs in 60 balls, which accounts for a strike rate of 226, clobbering 11 fours and 12 sixes.

Speaking with ESPNcricinfo, Hussey said he hoped Dhoni plays for two more seasons as he is hitting the ball well; however, the CSK batting coach did also mention Dhoni’s knee issue, for which he had surgery last year. Hussey said Dhoni still hasn’t revealed his decision in the dressing room yet.
“Your guess is as good as mine at this stage. He keeps his cards very, very close to his chest. We are hoping he does keep going,” Hussey told ESPN.
“He is still batting so well. He does prepare well – he gets into the camp very early and hits a lot of balls. He has been in good touch all season really. I guess we just got to try to manage him from the body side of things. He had a knee surgery after the last season. So he has been managing that from the initial stage of the tournament.
“From a personal point of view, I hope he keeps going for another couple of years. But we will just have to wait and see. He is the only one who will make that call. And he likes to sort of build the drama a little bit as well. So I wouldn’t expect a decision anytime soon,” he added.
The former Australian batsman said Dhoni took everyone by surprise when he announced in the dressing room that he wouldn’t be attending the pre-tournament captain’s press conference before confirming that Gaikwad would be the new skipper.
CSK will face RCB on May 18 at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. CSK need to win this match to ensure their qualification or avoid losing by a margin where their net run rate doesn’t go below RCB’s.
