Wrong Clip Shown To Third Umpire in RR Vs DC game: Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson’s dismissal against the Delhi Capitals was one of the most controversial umpiring decisions of IPL 2024. But there might have been an absolute blunder just a few overs later in the same match.
RR took on DC in Match 56 of IPL 2024 in Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. While batting first, the home team stepped onto the front foot right from the start. They scored 78 in the powerplay and kept the momentum going.
On the backs of splendid 50s by Jake Fraser-McGurk and Abhishek Porel, the Captals reached a score of 221 in 20 overs.
In response, RR lost their openers in the powerplay, but Sanju kept the run rate in check. Decent partnerships with Riyan Parag and Shunbam Dubey took them to the 16th over, where Samson looked to hit the ball over the long-on boundary, only for Shai Hope to catch it right at the edge.

The replays showed what looked like Hope’s feet touching the boundary skirt, and the RR captain was given out nonetheless after scoring 86 off 46.
This has since become a very controversial decision, with most fans and experts claiming that it should have been given a six. But to be fair, it could not be said with 100% certainty at the moment that it was a six. So even if we feel the decision was wrong, the decision of the third umpire, Michael Gough, is somewhat understandable.

What is an even bigger blunder of the DRS technology is what happened just a few overs later. Rasikh Salam came in to bowl the 19th over. With just seven balls remaining in the match with Rovman Powell on the strike, Salam bowled a wide yorker, which the batter missed and immediately took a review for wide.
While checking whether that ball was wide or not, the third umpire could not come to a conclusion as, from the front-on angle, the ball was completely hidden behind the bat. However, it looked from the ball’s trajectory in the previous frames that it was going wide. No issues, as we have several angles to check the legality of the ball.
The third umpire called for an engle from behind the batter, and it was displayed. But the clip shown from that angle was not of that ball but of the previous ball, which was well and truly in.

This must have influenced his decision somewhat, as the decision had to be given on the basis of the front-on angle, and the verdict came out as “inconclusive” and was not given the wide.
Mind you, it is not the third umpire who selects the clips, but the broadcasters who provide the umpire with the clips they ask for. So this is a massive error from the broadcasting team.
This has happened on a few occasions in the history of the Decision Review System, from Sachin Tendulkar in the 2011 IPL against the Deccan Chargers to MS Dhoni in the 2nd Test against the West Indies in the same year.
Most recently, this happened when Ravindra Jadeja was given out during the second Test vs. the West Indies in 2023.
Powell would end up being dismissed on the second ball of the last over, and RR went on to lose the match by 20 runs. With this loss, they have now settled into second place on the league table.
The Royals will play their next match against the Chennai Super Kings on May 11 in Chennai’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
