Can RCB still qualify for playoffs: 40 matches in the IPL 2024 are done and dusted. This means more than half of the 70 league matches have been completed, and all 10 teams have played at least seven matches each.
At the time of writing, after the 40th match, both five-time champions, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, are in the bottom half of the points table. Sanju Samson’s Rajasthan Royals are at the top of the table with 14 points in 8 games and are only one victory away from sealing their playoff spot.
Behind RR are Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Lucknow Super Giants, all three with 10 points each. CSK, Delhi Capitals, and Gujarat Titans have 8 points each, while Mumbai Indians (6), Punjab Kings (4), and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (2) form the bottom three teams and are very unlikely to finish in the top four.
Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli’s RCB are at the bottom of the points table, having won only one match and lost seven.
IPL 2024: Can RCB still qualify for playoffs?
Yes, RCB still have a very slim mathematical chance of reaching the playoffs. But that would require them to win all six of their remaining matches, which would take them to 14 points, and they will need a spate of other results to go their way. They will also need to win by big margins to boost their dire net run rate.
Though improbable and it would require the biggest of miracles in IPL history, RCB can qualify for the playoffs with 14 points.
That would require RR and two of SRH, KKR, and LSG to run away with 20 points or more, leaving other teams fighting for one spot. According to calculations, it’s possible that more than six teams finish with 12 points, leaving one team to reach the playoffs with 14 points.
But again, RCB, who have lost 7 out of 8 matches, will first need to win the rest of their games. It seems all but impossible right now.
