Alonso follows an effective but tough style of plate called gegenpressing. It involves pressuring the opponent at their own half by letting them commit mistakes and utilizing it to score goals with great passing.
Alonso would have been a great fit for Liverpool, as their manager Jurgen Klopp left after a historic run. Bayern Munich were also in the running to land Alonso as a replacement for Thomas Tuchel.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Xabi Alonso put all the rumors to bed by announcing that he would continue at Bayer Leverkusen.
“I’m grateful to Bayer and the board, the players, the fans… I feel that this is the best way, to continue together,” Alonso said.
“I have also informed the players, it’s true.”
“My deadline was this week, it’s a matter of respect. Now everything is clear”, he added.
