Memes on Mitchell Starc: Returning to the IPL after 9 years, KKR’s Mitchell Starc had a forgettable night with the ball against SRH on Saturday at the Eden Gardens. Even though it was a good batting pitch, with 200 being considered a par score by the curator, you’d expect a bowler of Starc’s quality and experience to do better than leaking 53 runs in four wicketless overs.
A two-time ODI World Cup winner and a T20 World Cup winner, Starc couldn’t show the temperament of correcting his pace and length in the 19th over of SRH’s chase that the uncapped 22-year-old Harshit Rana did in the 20th over.
While Mitchell Starc got blasted for four sixes in the penultimate over by Heinrich Klaasen and Shahbaz Ahmed, Rana held his nerves to dismiss both the power-hitters in the last over and win the game for KKR by only 4 runs.
KKR, who had not reached the playoffs in the last two seasons, had shelled out INR 24.75 crore on Mitchell Starc in the IPL 2024 auction. Gautam Gambhir, the KKR mentor, had said he was hoping for Starc to bring his international success to the IPL, the league where he hadn’t stepped foot in since 2015. In his first night on IPL comeback, Starc was out of rhythm and lacked reactiveness.
He started off with five wides before Abhishek Sharma and Mayank Agarwal took him for three fours in his first two powerplay overs.
He returned to concede only five runs in the 16th over but was utterly clobbered by Klaasen and Shahbaz in the 19th. The South African smoked three sixes—twice over mid-wicket and once over cover—and the Bengal left-hander hit a low full toss on the legside for a maximum. Starc missed his yorker twice and was duly pounded.
This led to huge trolling of the Australian speedster on Twitter.
