AUS vs NZ 2nd Test Report: Carey and Marsh Did the Job
The final day started with Australia on the edge, but they soon saw a historical defeat to New Zealand, the second Test match loss in three decades, but two of their players were reluctant to bend the knee. Rain delayed the start of play, but once the action began, Mitchell Marsh, after being dropped early in the day, counter-attacked effectively.
Carey joined Marsh at the crease after the dismissal of Travis Head, and under pressure to retain his place in the side, he delivered a solid performance. Despite some close calls, including an LBW decision and a caught-behind appeal, Carey, alongside Marsh, maintained a scoring rate of over 4 runs per over.
The second session saw an acceleration in the run rate, with Marsh reaching his half-century and Carey also notching up a fifty. Southee’s attempts to break the partnership proved futile. However, debutant Ben Sears provided a glimmer of hope for New Zealand by taking two quick wickets, breaking the partnership, and leaving Australia at 227/7.
With the target reduced to 59 runs, Pat Cummins, Australia’s No. 9, displayed his experience in tense situations. Surviving a hat-trick ball, he steadied the ship with Carey, who continued to play aggressive shots. Carey was left two runs short of a century when the winning runs were scored by Cummins, securing a three-wicket victory.
