While Joe Root had a staggering average of over 65 in Tests in 2023, he played most of those matches in England. The only away series in 2023 was in New Zealand, which has conditions similar to those in England.

His average in India before this series was over 50. But in the 3 matches, he has played so far in this series, he has scored 77 runs with an average of under 13.

A glaring example of it came in the 1st innings of the 3rd Test, where the 33-year-old tried to reverse sweep a Jasprit Burah ball. He ended up edging it and getting caught out in the slips. This dismissal was a batting collapse in a match that England lost by 434 runs.

Ian Chappell, during a recent appearance on Wide World of Sports, had this to say about how Joe Root should focus on this natural game.
“Root had a bloody fine record playing normally, and he was a quick scorer playing normally. I don’t see why he’s trying to change things drastically, and I’ve never believed you should play premeditated shots,”
said Chappell.
He then went on to complain about how Bazball does not allow the batters to assess the condition of a Test match.

“You can’t always do it — it’s got to be according to the conditions and also who’s bowling. Some bowlers can score off a lot quicker than others, but when a really good bowler is bowling a good spell, you’ve got to be prepared to try and battle it out and think to yourself ‘Well, when he goes off, it’ll get a bit easier. You’re always trying to score runs — that’s got to be your prime aim. But, you’ve also got to realise in some conditions, against some bowlers you can score quicker than others,”
he continued.
After handing India their biggest win in Test cricket history, England are currently down 2-1 in the ongoing five-match series. The 4th Test will be played in the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi, Jharkhand from February 23 to 27.
