On a personal level, Virat Kohli did not have a night to remember in the 3rd T20I against Afghanistan. The former captain was out for a golden duck, with his dismissal putting India in a tricky spot with 18/2. Despite that, India pulled through and ended on a solid score of 212/4 on the back of an iconic Rohit Sharma century and a quick 39-ball-69 by Rinku Singh.
Despite not contributing with the bat, Kohli did save a six with a perfectly timed jump, a six that could have decided the winner of the match.
But who would have thought that Afghanistan would not only come close to the target but equal India’s score and push the game to the Super Over? While batting first, the Afghans put up a decent total of 16 runs off of Mukesh Kumar’s over. In response, India too was able to make just 16 runs. Kick-off another Super Over.
This time Rohit Sharma gave India an amazing start with 10 runs off the first two balls, but then the Men in Blue lost two quick wickets and put up 11 runs.
It was Ravi Bishnoi who came up to defend a target of 12 runs, and the Rajasthan native took two wickets in three balls to seal the match for his side.
India’s whitewash win in this three-match series has come less than six months before the 2023 T20 World Cup. Is the thrilling victory in the final match a sign of things to come? Or is India yet again raising the hopes of the fans in the months before a World Cup?
