Aakash Chopra ODI Team Of The Year 2023: Cricket analyst and former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra recently shared his picks for his ODI team of the year for 2023. He looked at which players had the best 2023 in the 50-over format and shared his XI on his YouTube channel.
The biggest news coming out of his team is that it includes six Indians. This might seem unfair and biased to some considering the Men in Blue did not even win the ODI World Cup. But many people tend to forget in the misery of that loss that India was far and away the best team in the tournament.
Discussing the openers of his team, Aakash picked the Indian duo of Rohit Sharma and Shubhman Gill. While Rohit had a great World Cup and averaged 52 throughout the year, Gill was the highest run-scorer in the format in 2023 with 1584 runs. Rohit was also the captain of this team, taking India to the final of the World Cup.
At the no.3 spot, with no surprises, Chopra picked Virat Kohli. The King had another stellar year in ODIs. The highest-ever run-scorer in a World Cup with 765, Kohli completed his 50th ODI century this year and averaged 72 throughout the year.
At no. 4 he chose Daryl Mitchell. The New Zealander had a solid year, which included a solid 134-run innings in the World Cup semi-final vs. India. He was also the fifth-highest run scorer in the World Cup and scored over 1200 runs in 2023. AT no.5 he had Pakistan’s Mohammed Rizwan. While Aakash made the case for KL Rahul to be the side’s wicket-keeper, Mohammed Rizwan got the nod due to him being in decent form throughout the year.
AT no.6 was Bangladeshi all-rounder Shakib AL Hasan. While Aakash admitted that Shakib had a very ordinary year and World Cup, the all-rounder does bring solid value to any team he is a part of. No.7 was the lanky South African all-rounder Marco Jansen, who picked 33 wickets in 20 matches and scored 406 runs with an average of 33 in ODIs in 2023.

Now coming to bowlers. No.8 was yet another South African. Gerald Coetzee made his name on the international stage this year, picking up 31 wickets in 14 matches with an average of 23.2. While no. 9 was India’s premiere leggie, Kuldeep Yadav. Making a comeback into the national side, Kuldeep had a fantastic year, picking up 48 wickets in 28 matches with an economy of 4.6 and an average of under 20.
For no.10 and 11, Aakash Chopra chose the Indian duo of Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj. While Shami rocked the World Cup and was the tournament’s highest wicket-taker with 24, Siraj was consistently brilliant for India throughout the year.
Chopra also named four reserve players to make it a 15-man squad, where he named Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi, Australia’s Adam Zampa, India’s KL Rahul, and New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra.
Looking at the squad, there are 6 Indians in the playing 11, seventh if you count the reserve KL Rahul. There are two South Africans. One New Zealander with one in the reserves, one Pakistani with one in the reserves, and one Bangladeshi cricketer.
Surprisingly, there are no Australians in the team despite winning the World Cup. The only one named in the video was Adam Zampa, who despite having a stellar World Cup, was only named in the reserves.
