Makhachev, who himself won the title after defeating Oliviera for the vacant belt at UFC 280, is two defences deep into his championship run and is ranked #1 on the P4P rankings.
Gaethje had victories over Rafael Fiziev and Dustin Poirier in 2023 and is now the #1 Contender for the Lightweight title. In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), he announced that he is waiting on UFC President Dana White to book the match between him and Islam.

The mention of Charles Oliviera in that tweet refers to the time when the Brazilian fighter pulled out of a rematch against Makhachev at UFC 294 due to suffering a gruesome cut during training.
