In the aftermath of the match, reports emerged that Newcastle were looking to sign a new no.1 keeper to replace Nick Pope in the squad in the upcoming transfer window. Yes, we brought in Nick – we wanted to build competition for places, we wanted to build a squad that we felt could really carry us to great success – but Martin is a high-class goalkeeper… He’s a brilliant shot-stopper himself, he’s very good with his feet and his distribution, so no hesitation about bringing Martin into the team and I hope he does really well,”.
said Howe.
Nick Pope has long been in and around the English National team, with many backing him to be the team’s first-choice keeper for the upcoming UEFA Euros 2024. As per the Newcastle United Not Looking For A New Goalkeeper, While the timeline for his recovery finishes a month before the tournament starts in May, coming back to the team and climbing his way back to be the first-choice keeper for the tournament will be a tall ask for the 31-year-old.
