Ganguly again said that it was not him behind Virat’s stepdown, but the player himself who was behind the decision.
“I didn’t remove Virat from the captaincy. I have told you this a lot of times. He was not interested in leading in T20Is.”

But he admitted asking Kohli to step down from the entire white-ball cricket if he is coming off the T20I captaincy.
“So, after he made that decision, I told him, if you’re not interested in leading in T20Is, it’s better if you step down from entire white-ball cricket. Let there be a white-ball captain and a red-ball captain.” He added.
Bigger Context
Virat Kohli quit as India’s T20I captain after the 2021 T20 World Cup. Briefly after that, he was removed from the ODI captaincy as well. Surprisingly, it didn’t take him much time to retire from the Test captaincy, and the star decided to step down from the red-ball captaincy after India’s South Africa tour of 2021–22.
Ganguly, who was the BCCI president at the time, was blamed as the person behind this. But his stand on this was always the same, as he rejected any of those allegations as true.
