The team that went to and won the 2020 U-19 World Cup is no different. In fact, that team might end up producing the most stars out of any of its predecessors.

While the likes of Ravi Bishnoi and Tilak Varma were part of the squad, arguably the biggest name to have emerged from that team is the tournament’s top scorer Yashasvi Jaiswal. In a recent interview, the Mumbai-based batter’s childhood coach Jwala Singh praised his former student, claiming that his batting style closely resembles former Indian opening batter Virender Sehwag, even claiming that Jaiswal is a better version of the legendary batter.
“He is Virender Sehwag’s improved version. Undoubtedly, Sehwag was a significant player. There wasn’t much T20 cricket played when Sehwag was playing. Today, things have changed considerably. Yashasvi plays a variety of shots with extremely precise technique, making him an improved version of Virender Sehwag,” said Jwala Singh.

And yes, his approach can be likened to that of Sehwag. Whether it be for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, his limited time playing for the national team, or his time in the domestic circuit, Yashasi Jaiswal has shown his intention and ability to score at a brisk pace regardless the format, something pioneered for the 21st century by Sehwag.

The coach then went on to discuss how several shots in Yashasvi’s arsenal resemble those played by the likes of Sehwag and former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, he said –
“Yashasvi is fond of a lot of players. His square cut gives you a glimpse of Sourav Ganguly. He plays on offside much like Sourav Ganguly does. Additionally, he has Virender Sehwag’s pull and cut. He is a hybrid of Ganguly and Sehwag, who are legends.”
In the recent ongoing T20I series against Australia, Jaiswal played a spectacular 25-ball-53-run inning that laid the foundation for India’s win in that match. The 22-year-old also had a fantastic 2023 season in the IPL, where he scored a solid 625 runs in 14 matches with a strike rate of over 160.
Following the ongoing series against Australia, India will tour South Africa to play Tests and T20Is. They will then host Afghanistan and England for successive tours before IPL 2024. While for most of that time, Rohit Sharma is expected to be part of the squad, reports suggesting that the Indian captain might not play T20Is in the future might result in a spot for Yashasvi Jaiswal in the squad on a more permanent basis ahead of the 2023 T20 World Cup.
