Fastest ODI World Cup Century: Australia powerhouse finisher Glenn Maxwell wrought carnage on the Netherlands bowlers when they met for their World Cup 2023 clash in Delhi.
The Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi had in previous years produced challenging pitches for the batters. However, after being relaid this year, now it’s become a graveyard for the bowlers as there have been 6 centuries in 4 matches here in the tournament so far.
One of those came from the blazing bat of Glenn Maxwell, who now is the record holder of the fastest ODI World Cup century.

Against the Netherlands in Delhi, Glenn Maxwell smashed a century in 40 balls, which is the fastest ODI World Cup hundred. He broke Aiden Markram’s record of 49 balls, which the South African had set earlier in this tournament, also in Delhi, against Sri Lanka.
Maxwell had come in to bat at the start of the 40th over. He started off in typical aggressive Maxwell fashion with 2 fours in the first three balls he faced and continued on that to reach his half-century in 27 balls. After that, he teed off spectacularly and scored his next 50 runs in only 13 balls!

Overall, Glenn Maxwell’s thunderous knock of 104 runs in 44 balls included 9 fours and 8 sixes. He tore into Bas de Leede in the 49th over with two fours and 3 sixes. At the end of Australia’s innings, Bas de Leede went back with an unwanted record of the most expensive ODI figures – 2/115.
The most insane of Maxwell’s shots was when he reverse-swept a delivery on the leg-stump from de Leede and sent it for a six-over backward point! This left everyone astonished, including commentator Shane Watson who exulted “Oh that’s ridiculous.” Fittingly, Maxwell completed his ton with a gigantic hit on the leg side off a full toss from de Leede.
And to think that Maxwell, as he revealed, had been unwell and had not had a proper sleep for two days leading into this game, makes his record-breaking knock even more incredible.
This magnificent knock from cricket’s ‘Big Show’ propelled Australia’s total to 399, which eventually resulted in a massive victory margin of 309 runs. This mammoth victory margin boosted Australia’s Net Run Rate, and the helped them upsurge in the points table.
