Afghanistan win over England CWC 2023: Mohammad Nabi has been the face of Afghanistan’s rise in World Cricket from the late 2000s. Former captain of the national side, the now 38-year-old has been one of the best all-rounders in the world for a few years.
Having fled to Pakistan in the late 1980s due to the Soviet-Afghan War, Nabi first started playing cricket at the age of 10 in Peshawar. After moving back to Afghanistan in the year 2000, he started playing club-level cricket in the war-ravaged country. He made his first impression on global cricket while representing an unofficial Afghanistan team against MCC in Mumbai, where he scored an impressive 166.

Since then, Nabi has been a crucial part of the Afghan national team in their journey from being a World Cricket League team, to being a One Day International nation in 2009. He was captain when Afghanistan first appeared in the 2014 T20 World Cup and then the 2015 World Cup. He has now been a team leader during the side’s incredible rise over the last decade, culminating in their back-to-back wins over England and Pakistan in the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
His and Afghanistan’s recent win over England brought forth an incredible fact about the incredible career of Mohammad Nabi. Having been part of his national team’s rise from the dumps to the top, Nabi, while being part of different teams representing Afghanistan on the international stage, has defeated 43 countries in a match of cricket. This incredible stat was brought to light by The Cricketer’s Nick Friend.

For reference – Virat Kohli, who has had a long and remarkable career against a variety of teams, has only played against 16 national teams across all formats. This is due to cricket being a very exclusive sport, with only “the best” teams playing each other, while “the others” are left to scrap it out in the mud pool that is Association Nation cricket.
As far as all the countries Mohammad Nabi has won over are concerned, here are all of them listed in order of their loss against the Afghan legend – Bahrain, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Iran, Thailand, Nepal, UAE, Japan, the Bahamas, Botswana, Jersey, Fiji, Tanzania, Italy, Hong Kong, Argentina, Papua New Guinea, Cayman Islands, Oman, Denmark, Bermuda, Ireland, Scotland, the Netherlands, China, Namibia, Singapore, Canada, USA, Kenya, Pakistan, Trinidad & Tobago, Bhutan, Maldives, Barbados, Uganda, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, West Indies, Sri Lanka and England.
While not all these wins came in official ICC-sanctioned matches or events, this statistic is mind-blowing and might never be recreated again. This list started back when Nabi was in exile from his homeland, and now stands at the pinnacle of World cricket. He might also be able to add to this list, as the likes of India, Australia, and South Africa are yet to be defeated by Mohammad Nabi and Afghanistan.
It comes as no surprise that Mohammad Nabi is an absolute legend of the sport. He is also the face of how players and countries can rise from the bottom of the barrel to the very top of cricket in the timespan of one player’s career.
