Gary Stead Extends as New Zealand Head Coach: New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has confirmed that Gary Stead will continue his role as the head coach of the New Zealand men’s cricket team until mid-2025.
Stead’s initial contract was set to expire after the ODI World Cup in November this year, but the extension allows him to oversee the team across formats, including crucial events such as the T20 World Cup in 2024 and the Champions Trophy in 2025. Additionally, Stead will lead the team throughout the 2023-25 World Test Championship Cycle.
Format-Specific Split-Coaching System Wouldn’t be Implemented
After extensive discussions between Stead and New Zealand Cricket, the decision to retain him was made. There were also deliberations about implementing a format-specific split-coaching system, but ultimately, the idea was dismissed.

We valued fresh voices and ideas within the team environment but concluded that we could incorporate new perspectives through means other than split coaching.”
Successful Era
Having taken up the position in late 2018 following Mike Hesson’s departure, Stead presided over a highly successful period in New Zealand cricket history. Under his guidance, the team reached the finals of both the 2019 ODI World Cup and the 2021 T20 World Cup. Notably, they also secured the inaugural World Test Championship title by defeating India in the final at Southampton.
