The Chennai Super Kings made a push towards playoff qualification with a victory over the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2026. But why did DC lose to CSK?

Today’s DC vs CSK game was Match 48 of IPL 2026. It was played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, with the home team winning the toss and deciding to bat first. This immediately looked like a wrong decision, as the Capitals lost both their openers in the powerplay. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals while never accelerating their run rate. Their score was 155/7 in 20 overs.

In response, the Super Kings saw Sanju Samson anchor their innings despite two quick wickets. He was supported by Kartik Sharma as Chennai won this game by eight wickets with 15 balls to spare.

Today, we will discuss three hits and flops from the DC vs CSK game in IPL 2026 Match 48.

Three Hits And Flops From DC Vs CSK Match

Hits

1. Sanju Samson

Sanju Samson has been a revelation for the Chennai Super Kings this season. Brought in via a blockbuster trade with the Rajasthan Royals, the wicketkeeper/batter got off to a poor start this season but soon bounced back with two centuries. Tonight, he once again shone as the top performer for the five-time champions.

Sanju opened the batting alongside out-of-form captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. The skipper departed for six off 13 after struggling with the bat for his entire duration on the crease. Then, by the seventh over, Urvil Patel had come and departed for 17 off nine.

At 45/2 in a tricky phase, CSK needed someone to stabalise the inning. That is exactly what Samson was doing at the other end. He was batting at run-a-ball until the eighth over, after which point he decided to speed up.

He would reach his half-century in 32 balls in the 12th over and then continued dominating. He would finish the game with a not out 87 off 52 and would be declared the Player of the Match for his game-winning inning.

2. CSK’s Spin-Duo

For much of the IPL 2026 season, the Chennai Super Kings have used an overseas spin duo. While this is something that successful teams tend to avoid, this move has netted CSK positive results.

The duo of Noor Ahad and Akeal Hosein has taken 18 wickets in 15 games this season. Noor has consistently excelled in the CSK-yellow, while the lanky-West Indian has demonstrated moments of brilliance.

Tonight, the two bowled seven overs, conceded just 41 runs, and took three wickets. First up, Akeal Hosein, who bowled four overs, conceded 19 runs at an insane economy of 4.75 and took a crucial wicket of KL Rahul. Akeal was instrumental in bogging down the DC inning in the first half.

Then comes Noor Ahmad, who bowled three overs, conceded 22 runs at an economy of 7.33, and took two wickets, dismissing Nitish Rana and Karun Nair.

3. Impact Player Sameer Rizvi

This one was a math to forget for the Delhi Capitals. But there was one sliver of positivity for the losing side, that being a solid finish provided by Sameer Rizvi.

Rizvi got off to a brilliant start to the season. At a point, three or so games in, he was even the Orange Cap holder. But as the season progressed, his performances deteriorated, following which he was dropped from the side. Tonight, however, he was responsible for bringing his team to a respectable total.

By the time he arrived at the crease, the Capitals were reeling at 69/5 at the end of the 11th over. Sameer would stabalise the innings alongside Tristan Stubbs. The two played some cautious cricket for a few overs, bringing the score to 116 in 17 overs. Rizvi was playing at 18 off 15 at this point but then decided to pick up the pace.

In the 18th over, the Impact Player would hit two sixes. Another two sixes on the last ball of the innings brought his score to 40 off 24. He had a strike rate of 166.7 on a night where his teammates scored at nothing higher than 130.

Flops

1. DC’s Top Order

DC’s top-order, at different points this season, has been excellent. Pathum Nissanka has scored some decent runs, KL Rahul scored the first 150 by an Indian in the IPL this season, and Nitish Rana has played a supporting role in a few games. However, none of them took the charge tonight.

Rahul and Nissanka opened the DC innings tonight. While the Sri Lankan hit a few boundaries in the early go, he did struggle against spin and pace in the powerplay. His demise would come in the fourth over. After hitting Mukesh Choudhary for a four and a six earlier in the over, Pathum misjudged a slower one and gave an easy catch to Dewald Brevis at mid-on, getting out for 19 off 15.

On the other hand, Rahul played cautiously in the early go but never got the chance to pick the pace up. On the first ball of the sixth over, the wicketkeeper/batter looked to hit Akeal Hosein inside-out but was instead caught at covers for 12 off 13.

Nitish Rana did not control the innings after the openers got out early. HE got out in the 10th over for 15 off 13 at the hands of Noor Ahmad.

The middle order didn’t plant any flags either. Karun Nair did not have a memorable night with the bat as well. His wicket would come at the hands of Noor Ahmad at the end of the eighth over. Nair weeped a poor delivery straight into the hands of short fine leg, getting out for a run-a-ball 13.

Finally, DC captain Axar Patel made just two runs before falling at the hands of Gurjapneet Singh in the 11th over.

2. Anshul Kamboj

Anshul Kamboj has been a real find for the Chennai Super Kings this season. After making his debut and struggling last season, Kamboj has really grown into his jersey. He is currently the leading wicket taker for his team and is in the race for the Purple Cap with 17 wickets in 10 matches.

However, he was also an outlier for the Super Kings tonight as their only bowler who performed poorly.

While he did not take any wickets in his first couple of overs, he also conceded just 15 runs. The third over of this spell would be quite different.

Kamboj came in to bowl the 18th over of the DC innings and gave away 14 runs as Sameer Rizvi hit him for two sixes. If his spell were not at 1/29 after three overs, he would have an even worse final over of his spell.

Anshul Kamboj bowled the 20th over of the first inning. That over saw Sameer Rizvi hit two maximums and Ashutish Sharma hit one. The 20th over went for 20 runs, ruining Kamboj’s figures for the night. He finished his bowling spell at 0/49.

3. DC’s Toothless Bowling Attack

The Delhi Capitals batting order did not give their bowling attack too much to defend. A target of 156 in today’s IPL economy is far too little. Even still the bowling, at several moments, was below par.

DC did take an early wicket today, as Lungi Ngidi, who was their best-performing bowler at the end of the night, took the wicket of opposition captain Ruturaj Gaikwad in the fourth over. A wicket of Urvil Patel in the seventh promised a close match between the two teams, one that did not end up coming to fruition.

Sanju Sasom, with a calm intensity, dominated the DC bowlers throughout. The ikes of Kuldeep Yadav and T. Natarajan had a horrid night with the ball. Kuldeep conceded 34 runs in three overs without taking a wicket at an economy of 11.33, while Natarajan gave away 39 in 2.3 overs at an economy of 15.6.

While Mitchell Starc did bowl precisely, he did not take a wicket tonight, finishing the game with the figure 0/30. On the other hand, after taking a wicket quickly, Lungi Ngidi did not build upon it and take any more.

In the end, this bowling attack took just two wickets in 17 odd overs as the target was chased down with 15 balls to spare.
