We are just days away from the biggest sporting extravaganza in the world, as the FIFA World Cup 2026 will kick off on Thursday, June 11 (June 12 IST). The competition will be hosted by the United States of America, Canada, and Mexico and will be the biggest edition of the tournament yet, with 48 teams participating.
These 48 teams, several of them having qualified for the World Cup for the first time, have been divided into 12 groups of four teams each.
Each side will go up against the other in a group once. After each team has played their three games, the nations that finish in the top two in their group will qualify for the Round of 32. But that just gives us 24 teams. And so, the eight best-performing third-placed sides will also make it to the knockout rounds.
World Cup Group A Predictions
Today, we will predict how Group A of the FIFA World Cup 2026 will shape up at the end of the group stage. This might be the tightest group in the competition, with South Africa, South Korea, the Czech Republic, and co-hosts Mexico being in it.
This is Mexico’s 18th World Cup qualification, and probably their easiest. They did not go through the long and arduous qualification rounds. As hosts, they found a direct ticket into the tournament.
As for South Africa, this is only their fourth appearance in the FIFA World Cup and the first since they hosted this carnival back in 2010. They had a dominant path through CAF qualification into the World Cup. In Group C of African qualifications, the Proteas pipped five other teams, including Nigeria, to top their group and book their tickets to America.
South Korea, as one of the highest-ranked Asian teams, skipped the first round of AFC qualification. Then, in the second round, they topped their four-team group to make it to the third round. Then, in the third round, they topped Group B, consisting of six teams, to confirm their 12th World Cup qualification.
Finally, the Czech Republic, the only European side in this group, had a long way to wade through the UEFA qualifiers. First, in a five-team Group L of the first qualifying round, they finished second behind Croatia to make it to the play-off round. There, Czechia had to win a four-team knockout pot against the likes of Denmark and Ireland, which they did to qualify for the World Cup.
Now, let’s see who will make it to the Round of 32 from Group A –
Mexico, over the past couple of years, had not been in the best form. Many even believed that if not for automatic qualification, they might have struggled to make it to the World Cup.
However, this team has finally found some form in 2026. Draws against the likes of Uruguay and Portugal in friendlies and wins against strong teams like Ghana and Australia make us believe that this team will finish in the top two.
South Korea has struggled as of late. While many would consider them the favorites to win this group, their recent defeats against the likes of Austria and a 4-0 drubbing to Ivory Coast tell a different story. While they should still make it to the knockout rounds, they will find it difficult to top their group.
Czechia had a strong showing in the UEFA qualifiers. And while they are the only European side in this group, they are also against continental heavyweights like South Korea and Mexico. Qualification will not come easy for them.
Finally, South Africa, who punched above their weight in the CAF qualifiers. But they are the only team here who have never made it out of the World Cup group stage. They are the weakest team in this group and the favorites to finish last.
