Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh heaped praise on the latest sensation of the Indian National Cricket Team, Abhishek Sharma, following the latter’s first international century.
Abhishek made his Indian debut in the first of five T20Is against Zimbabwe. He got off to a poor start on his international career, getting out for a duck in the first game of the series, which India lost by 13 runs.
Batting first in the second game, Abhishek opened once again with Shubman Gill and blew away the Zimbabwean bowlers, smashing the ball around in the first few overs.
In just his second game in the Indian jersey, Sharma scored a fabulous ton, that too in just 46 deliveries. This was India’s third-fastest 100 ever in T20 Internationals.
While he did get out on the following ball, the Punjab opener had done his job, as his inning was crucial in taking India to a massive total of 234/2 at the end of 20 overs. The Men in Blue ended up winning the match by 100 runs in the end, with Abhishek Sharma named the Player of the Match.
Punjab and Indian cricket legend Yuvraj Singh has been a believer in Sharma for years now. In previous statements, he has kept Sharma and Shubman Gill, who is captaining this Indian team on the Zimbabwe tour, on the same pedestal.

Following the 23-year-old’s first century for India, Yuvi took to social media to congratulate the young opener, writing:
“Rome wasn’t built in a day! Congratulations @IamAbhiSharma4 on the journey to your first International 100! Many more to come.”
The India team on the Zimbabwe tour is very different from the team that won the 2024 T20 World Cup just over a week ago. In fact, there is no overlap between the two teams.
Several players are making their T20I debuts on this tour; Abhishek Sharma, after impressing the world during the IPL 2024, is one of them. Another debutant is Riyam Parag, who has silently been the best limited-overs all-rounder in domestic cricket for a couple of years now and had a splendid IPL 2024.
Dhruv Jurel had already debuted for India in Tests earlier this year, was mightily impressive, and is now donning the blue jersey for India for the first time. Finally, there is Sai Sudharsan, who has been excellent on the domestic circuit and in the IPL.

With such a young squad, one would believe that they would play it safe after losing the first game of the series, but that was not the case. Following India’s massive win in the second T20I, Abhishek Sharma had this to say about the team’s attitude following the loss:
“Losing a game like that after the country had won a T20 World Cup was disappointing for the players. But still, we were all youngsters and have been playing together and against each other since childhood. So none of us went into our shells after losing; instead, we were all together and thinking about the hard work we put in all those years and how this is the ultimate goal for all of us, so we should enjoy and focus on the next thing. The mindset was to forget what had happened and focus on the next match.”
The 3rd India vs Zimbabwe T20I will be played on July 10 at 4:30 p.m. (IST) in the Harare Sports Club in the country’s capital.
