Young Talents in Bangladesh Asia Cup Squad: Initially, four members from the triumphant Under-19 squad were selected for the Asia Cup: Tawhid Hridoy, Shamim Hossain, Shoriful Islam, and uncapped Tanzid Hasan Tamim. The count later increased to five when pace-bowling all-rounder Tanzim Hasan Sakib replaced the injured Ebadot Hossain.
Shoriful and Hridoy have already showcased their skills, with Shoriful gaining prominence recently and Hridoy establishing himself as a key player in the white-ball formats. Shamim, a pick from the World Cup-winning batch, has also rejoined the national side after a hiatus. Uncapped Tanzid, replacing the injured Tamim Iqbal, is showing promise as a pace-bowling all-rounder, offering both speed and batting prowess.

Naved Newaz, now the assistant coach of Sri Lanka, expresses his best wishes for the young players but jokingly hopes they won’t perform too well against his team. Recognizing their Under-19 World Cup victory as a significant achievement, Newaz emphasizes that their journey has only just begun and that their success at the senior level depends on how they tackle the challenges of international cricket.
“I wish them all the best and hope that will not do too well against Sri Lanka when we play them on the 31st. It is a massive achievement to clinch the Under-19 World Cup because it’s the start of a challenge laid ahead of them and it will all depend on how they will cope with the challenges that international cricket throws at them and how they will sustain them and how they will keep getting better.”
Nawaz also showed his happiness in mentoring the side. “I am happy that I was part of it and as a coach and as a mentor happy to see the progress of people you know it gives satisfaction for me and hopefully they will do well in international cricket and cope with the pressure of international cricket and keep learning about how they should go ahead and work ethics about how positively they meet the team requirements.”

The Under-19 batch’s performance is garnering comparisons to Bangladesh’s golden generation of 2005, featuring Tamim, Shakib al Hasan, and Mushfiqur Rahim. This current batch’s consistent presence in the national setup contrasts with sporadic appearances following the 2005 success.
Akbar Ali, captain of the World Cup-winning squad, highlights their positive mindset as their core strength. They remain level-headed during both successes and setbacks, ensuring they don’t get overwhelmed by emotions. The players’ mental resilience and their 24-month scholarship from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) have been instrumental, especially during the pandemic, allowing them to focus on their cricket.

With these young talents rapidly making their impact, it’s evident that the transition from boys to men is well underway in Bangladesh cricket.
