Will Rohit Sharma Play For MI Next Season: Mumbai Indians head coach Mark Boucher opened up about what he thinks about Rohit Sharma’s future with the franchise, revealing a conversation he had with the former captain.
Sharma, despite being the captain of the Indian national team, was replaced as the captain of MI in favor of Hardik Pandya ahead of this season.
In hindsight, this might not have been the best decision. Under Pandya’s captaincy, the Indians finished at the bottom of the league table. Several of the team’s star players failed to perform consistently throughout this season, captain Hardik being one of them.
While Rohit himself seemed to have had a decent career on paper, it was a tournament of two halves for him. In the first seven games, he scored about 300 runs. But in the last seven games, he only crossed the 20-run mark once, when he scored 68 in a dead-rubber game against the Lucknow Super Giants.
Reports and rumors emerged throughout the last few months that the 37-year-old opener has not been thrilled with losing the captaincy of a franchise he led to five titles in 10 years. He might have even been complaining about this to higher-ups, but we don’t know for sure.
Will Rohit Sharma Play For MI Next Season?
Mark Boucher, who was in the second year of his duties as head coach of MI, opened up about Rohit Sharma’s future with the team. In a recent press conference after a loss against LSG, the South African claimed that Rohit’s future with the Mumbai Indians is in his hands.
“That’s all I need to know about what Rohit Sharma’s future is. For me, he is the master of his own destiny. It’s a big auction next season; who knows what’s going to happen? We’ll just have to take each day as it comes,” said Boucher.
The head coach also claimed during the press conference that Rohit Sharma’s entire focus at the moment is on the upcoming 2-24 T20 World Cup, which will start on June 2 (IST).
“To be honest, there haven’t been many conversations about Rohit’s future. I spoke to him last night or the night before, just to do basically a little review of the season. And I said, ‘What’s next for Rohit Sharma?’ and he said to me, ‘World Cup.’ And that’s perfect.”
Now that the Mumbai Indians are out of the IPL, India captain Rohit Sharma’s sole focus will be on the World Cup. The Men in Blue will kick off their campaign on June 5 against Ireland; they will then face arch-rivals Pakistan on June 9. Next will be a match against co-hosts the United States on June 12, followed by India’s last group A match against Canada on June 15.
