Will Rohit Sharma Leave Mumbai Indians Ahead Of IPL 2025? Former Mumbai Indians and India spinner Pragyan Ojha has given his opinion on the rumors regarding Rohit Sharma’s potential departure from Mumbai Indians ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Rumors have claimed that while MI want to retain Rohit, who led them to five IPL titles, the 37-year-old former skipper reportedly wishes to move on from MI and find a new home, possibly Lucknow Super Giants, Punjab Kings, or Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
The relationship between Rohit and the MI owners and management reportedly was strained after MI traded in Hardik Pandya from the Gujarat Titans last year and immediately appointed him as their new captain ahead of IPL 2024. This year, in Pandya’s debut season as MI captain, Mumbai finished at the bottom of the points table. MI last won an IPL trophy in 2020 and haven’t reached an IPL final since.
Despite being 37 years of age, Rohit will be in demand among the IPL franchises. He boasts a huge brand off the field, while on it, he’s been in sizzling form across formats in recent years and earlier this year, led India to the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 title. LSG, PBKS, and RCB are reportedly looking for new captains to replace KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan, and Faf du Plessis.
Will Rohit Sharma Leave Mumbai Indians Ahead Of IPL 2025?: Pragyan Ojha Opines
Pragyan Ojha, Rohit’s former teammate at the Mumbai Indians, believes that Sharma should continue with MI for another season.
Speaking with InsideSport, Ojha said,
“It won’t be easy if that happens (Rohit leaving Mumbai Indians). Personally, I would say that Rohit should continue to play for the Mumbai Indians because of the contribution that he’s made. And he has grown as a captain, as a player. The stature that he is in today is somewhere connected to Mumbai Indians.”
“So I would say that if he stays there—well and good. But if he moves on, that’s how it is. Because this is a franchise tournament and sometimes these things happen,” Ojha added.
Ojha won two titles with MI in 2013 and 2015.
On the other hand, former India batsman and now renowned commentator Aakash Chopra feels that MI would release Rohit. Chopra reckons Rohit’s time with MI has come to an end.
“Anything can happen, but I don’t think Rohit is going to be retained here. I don’t have any information, but I feel Rohit will probably be released. He might go to someone in the trade window; there’s a possibility that he doesn’t go to the auction, but if that doesn’t happen, he might be seen in the auction. I feel his journey with the Mumbai Indians is over,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
