MI had brought Hardik after the franchise had had consecutive failed seasons under the former captain Rohit Sharma.
Hardik had a spectacular run, with GT winning twice in the only two seasons since the formation and winning the title once.
MI dreams of this kind of impact and looks at Hardik as the future.

But when Hardik stepped into the field as MI captain for the first time, it wasn’t easy for him. From Rohit Sharma’s fans booing to MI losing a winnable match, critics have already started doubting his captaincy. Some even speculated that Rohit Sharma might be back as the MI captain.
But former Australian player Tom Moody thinks that Hardik Pandya will continue as MI captain, as the franchise sees him as the future.
“I will be very surprised if that is the case. It will be very short-sighted if suddenly five games in or eight games in, it will change. It is that long-term vision. So I think for Hardik Pandya, elevation to that leadership role, as controversial as it was and as a shock it was to lots of people, particularly MI fans, I think it’s a long-term decision,” Moody told to Star Sports
But Moody opined that Hardik ‘looked a little bit tentative’ and wasn’t the same captain as he was in the GT shirt.
“With Hardik’s first game, I would agree with you, he looked a little bit tentative, looked a little bit anxious, the captain that we saw over the last couple of years at the Titans was a very relaxed and very much in control leader,” he added.
Moody also said that it would take some time to create a captain-coach bond in Mumbai Indians.
“There’s no doubt the relationship between coach and captain is absolutely key. That’s a new relationship that’s forming at Mumbai Indians now with Boucher and Hardik Pandya. That’s going to take time to work and gel effectively. That’s got nothing to do with the game yesterday,” Moody said.
“He has got a few challenges ahead of him. He is at a huge franchise in Mumbai Indians and he has got some big players around him that are also got a huge amount of captaincy experience. He has to step up even further,” he added.
