Will Rohit and Virat Play in Duleep Trophy: India’s domestic season will get underway with the Duleep Trophy, which will start on September 5. The BCCI has reportedly asked plenty of India internationals to make themselves available for the first match of the tournament ahead of the two-match Test series against Bangladesh, starting September 19.
It has been learned that the likes of KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sarfaraz Khan, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shreyas Iyer, and Rajat Patidar will feature in the first game of the tournament in Bangalore.
The Duleep Trophy is played in a four-day format with the red ball. While Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh is the designated venue for this fixture, the BCCI shifted the first match to the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore because of the city’s connectivity with the airport and the involvement of these high-profile stars.
Will Rohit and Virat Play in Duleep Trophy match in Bangalore?
The biggest question among the fans is whether superstar India players Rohit Sharma, who is the Test and ODI captain, and Virat Kohli will play in the first match of the Duleep Trophy in Bangalore.
The BCCI has reportedly given the option to skip this match to these two and also to R Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah. “It’s up to them whether or not to play,” a source told Cricbuzz when asked about the participation of Rohit and Kohli in the Duleep Trophy.
Further, fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who is currently recovering from ankle surgery, is also expected to give this game a miss, but he could make his comeback in the Test series against either Bangladesh or New Zealand.
Apart from these senior and established players, the BCCI has told others, including Ishan Kishan, to make themselves available for the Duleep Trophy matches when they are not injured or not on India duty.
This move is in line with BCCI’s push for players to prioritize and give importance to domestic cricket, a hotly debated topic after the exclusion of Iyer and Kishan from the central contracts earlier this year after the duo opted out of playing Ranji Trophy games before the IPL 2024 despite being asked to.
